Tales for Tots
According to the Commission on reading…“the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading, is reading aloud to children.” Research shows that having books in the home increases the chances that a child will learn to read.
Child Care Resources of Rockland, Inc. began the Tales For Tots program in 1991 by bringing volunteers to Rockland County Clinics to read to children while they and their parents were waiting. The volunteers modeled reading aloud and language games for parents to see.
Tales For Tots Goes to Child Care Programs
Today the Tales for Tots Volunteer Literacy Program brings volunteer “readers” to child care programs.
The special attention for an individual child or a small group of children of being read to aloud can only enhance their literary skills and their enjoyment of reading and books. Additional books are donated to the classroom to enhance their libraries. Parents will receive information about the importance of reading to their children.
Benefits of Tales for Tots Program
Young children are receiving a head start towards emerging literacy because we know that children who are read to become readers. They have a greater chance to succeed in school, build positive self-esteem and become productive workers.
Child Care Resources of Rockland recruits and trains volunteers and gathers funds to purchase appropriate books for the volunteers to use at the child care centers and then leave for the children’s continued enjoyment.
